That’s what Phil Ochs wrote about–the news of the day.  He was a prolific songwriter–what we called in the 1960s a “topical” songwriter.  He only needed to pick up the latest edition of the newspaper or turn on the network news, and he had the basis of a song.  Whether it was writing a tribute to the U.S. Navy men who died in the Thresher submarine disaster, anti-war material, a song about apathy, or the poignant song about love, “Changes,” Phil had the poetic and political insight to reach the hearts and minds of many people during those turbulent times. read more

The Kindle rested on my lap, Fitzgerald going unread as the minutes trudged their way around the clock. Somehow there were still three hours before I could escape from L.A, and the seat in the fading terminal wasn’t getting any cushier.

Oh, there had been some excitement during the wait for the red-eye out of LAX. The paparazzi had rushed to shoot an arriving Gwen Stefani (“No Doubt lead singer, had a solo career, married Bush’s Gavin Rossdale,” I had told myself, unable to turn off the auto-recall that had become second nature over the past few years).  And I had spotted Harry Shearer (who happens to star in both my favorite TV show and movie, The Simpsons and This is Spinal Tap), exiting a flight from New Orleans. read more

Selected Shorts Coming to The Egg

WAMC will hold a benefit performance of Selected Shorts on Saturday, April, 30, 2011 at 6pm at The Egg in Albany, NY. Selected Shorts, a celebration of the short story, is a popular public radio program featuring stars of stage and screen reading spell-binding short stories aloud before a live audience.

This performance of Selected Shorts is an all Edgar Allan Poe show featuring classics such as The Bells, The Raven and The Mask of the Red Death performed by host Isaiah Scheffer and actors Keir Dullea and Mia Dillon.
