The Great WAMC Fund Drive is Coming…

The Great Fund Drive is right around the corner.  On October 10, we will come together as a community to celebrate all we have built.  We have a lot to be proud of — an incredible news operation; wonderful, stirring classical music; discussion programs that make you think; programs on politics, health, books, the arts, and so much more.

Yes, times are tough – we’re feeling it here, just as you are at home. We know that a million dollars is a lot of money but I would argue that now, more than ever and despite the country’s economic downturn, we need to keep this station alive and thriving.  There’s so much at stake: the election season is heating up, the debate over hydrofracking continues, the world’s economy is reeling, and the political landscape in the Middle East changes from day to day.  Where would you get your news if WAMC were not there?

The best way to ensure that we WILL be there, of course, is to help during the fund drive.  I’ve said it a million times:  anything you can do to help makes you a member of WAMC and part of the family.  Maybe you are in a position to offer a challenge – those super-pledges that generate incredible excitement and get the phones ringing.  They really, really work and if that’s something you think you can do, please call our Sharon Lescak at 518.465.5233 ext. 160 or e-mail

There are other things you can do to help….how about volunteering at the station?  There’s nothing quite like being in the thick of it during a fund drive. You can call Katie Horn at 518.465.5233, ext. 171 or e-mail to volunteer.  If you belong to a group or service organization or want to get some of your co-workers together to spend a few hours at the station answering the phones, we could sure use the help. If you could take some of the early morning (we start at 6:00 AM) or weekend shifts, you’d be a real WAMC super-hero, plus you’ll meet great people and eat amazing food.

And speaking of food – if you have a restaurant or catering business (or want to suggest one), we always need food for the staff and volunteers during the fund drive.  It’s a tax-deductible contribution for you and a great way to get the word out about your restaurant.  We all know that an army marches on its stomach and we’ll be needing lunches, dinners, desserts and snacks to feed the gang.  Katie can give you all the details.

Another way to help is to join the businesses and organizations that contribute goodies for us to give away during the drive.  Restaurant gift certificates, book store gift certificates, tickets to performing arts venues, unique products like soaps, candles, honey, jewelry – once we even had bags of shitake mushrooms to share with folks who pledged!  (Yes, we at WAMC pride ourselves in doing things a little bit differently.) Of course, the more you can provide in terms of numbers, the more people we can make happy.

Between now and the fund drive I’m asking you to think of yourself as an Ambassador of WAMC.  The next time someone asks you if you heard a certain story on the station, would you remind them that the fund drive is coming and invite them to pledge because in the end, that’s what it’s all about. We need to keep making the circle wider.  We need everybody, and I mean everybody, who listens to be there.  It all begins bright and early on October 10th.

I really was nearly outraged at the show including the museum people from Ft. Ticonderoga. They were not so neatly sidestepping the issue of Native Americans, and trying to avoid all together the invasion by whites in the first place. I was really upset…even though I saw, Alan, that you were trying to ask them these questions and NEVER really getting an answer. I was really ticked off. I am going to also write them a letter…If I had the energy of my youth I would be protesting outside the fort. I am going to pass this on to various Native action groups, as I am also part Native (Passamaquoddy) and find it unacceptable what they are doing there at the Museum.
