Roundtable Poll Question – Inundated with News?

The first quarter of this year has been filled with troubling news. The mass shooting in Arizona, the unrest in Egypt, the Japanese tsunami, earthquake, and nuclear fallout…and now Libya – War! We’ll extend our poll question this morning to discuss: How do we cope when we are inundated with news?

I reach a point where my mind is full…So, I turn everything off and take a mental vacation..Walk my dog , read a good book.listen to music.
I don’t have the power to fix it so I do something that I can fix.
The “news” will wait. I can always find it again. I love news papers.
I’m twenty-four years old, so I’ve had the distinction of growing up in a post-Columbine, post-9/11 world. Whenever I discuss current events with my parents and their baby boomer friends, they seem melodramatic, even fatalistic. They probably think I’m too narcissistic, but I would argue that my friends and I are particularly well-equipped to compartmentalize distressing news. It’s not that we don’t care — we just know from experience that there is more news – both good and bad – to come, so we tend not to get bogged down by the majority of it.
More like inundated with stray bits of “facts” about news, over and over again. Often there’s no developing story, just a mishmash of iffy bits. That’s hardly news but it’s still worth turning off. Like the local weather, news is becoming more about the hype than about the real stories.
It is important to remember that just because we have the AVAILABILITY of 24 hour news doesn’t mean that we need to consume the news 24 hours per day. It just offers the convenience of listening, viewing or reading when it is convenient. Once I focus on this, I am able to plan 2 or 3 times during my day to catch up and be aware, without allowing the news to rule my life.
